1. The Graduate
In The Graduate, 21-year-old Benjamin Braddock (played by Dustin Hoffman) is a recent college graduate with no well-defined aim in life, who is seduced by an older woman, the notorious Mrs. Robinson. Ben then falls in love with her daughter Elaine. Mrs. Robinson is a memorable character from the movie, but the scenes with Ben drifting in the family swimming pool, or his father making him demonstrate his new SCUBA gear, prove to be memorable–and many critics believe this water imagery is meaningful symbolism in the film. 2. It’s a Wonderful Life
One of the most popular films in American cinema, the 1945 film It’s a Wonderful Life stars James Stewart as George Bailey. a man who has given up his dreams in order to help others, and whose imminent suicide on Christmas Eve brings about the intervention of his guardian angel. The angel shows George all the lives he has touched and how different life in his community of Bedford Falls would be had he never been born. In one scene, George dances with his girlfriend on a retractable dance floor over top of a pool. The floor accidentally begins to open as they dance, causing the couple to fall in. Watch here.
3. Caddy Shack
A golf comedy with stars like Chevy Chase, Rodney Dangerfield and Bill Murray, the film follows the shenanigans at country club as Danny, a caddy, tries to pursue college by winning over the club’s stodgy co-founder and director to gain the caddy college scholarship. One of the hilarious scenes in the film is when the caddies and country club staff take over the swimming pool for fifteen minutes on “Caddies Day” and have a scare after a Baby Ruth bar ends up in the pool. 4. Meet the Parents
Greg Focker plans to propose to his girlfriend, but first he has to survive meeting her parents: played by Robert De Niro and Blythe Danner. In one scene, the family partakes in a game of pool volleyball which gets competitive, and a little hilariously out of hand for Greg. Watch here.
5. National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation
It’s not the holidays without watching Christmas Vacation. In the film, Clark Griswold (played by Chevy Chase) dreams of installing a backyard swimming pool with the money from his Christmas bonus. In one scene, he fantasizes about his family enjoying the pool. Watch here.
6. Garden State
A romantic comedy-drama starring Zach Braff and Natalie Portman, the film centers on Andrew Largeman, an actor/waiter who returns to his hometown in New Jersey after his mother dies. The scene where everyone jumps in the pool, except for Largeman, and he struggles to swim, is a funny and wonderful scene. Watch here.
